First of all, of course there's a level of deliberate alteration to make it suit their purposes.
Saying that though there's quite clear evidence of missing the point.
The Sam fandom covers rather deep topics in an unusual way that takes a lot of life experience to understand.
It tends to be that a lot of people looking at it at a glance misinterpret the message simply from lack of experience in their own lives.
It's fair to say the average TV show covers rather easily plainable elements of the psyche.
DHMIS is a cut above that as a somewhat parody to it by covering rather deep and more advanced aspects.
The problem is the creators of DHMIS being more experienced and more mature than the average person by far.
This causes a weird idea in their heads that they know all about the subject as they're probably the spiritual word of wisdom in their own group.
The thing they don't seem to understand is that there are levels of spiritual development and they're definitely not at the top.
The Sam fandom itself never claims to have achieved that level of understanding and we can almost quote Sam himself on that.
The DHMIS writers took a glance at the Sam fandom and judged it based on their own experiences rather than reading more into it.
To be honest that's fair and easy to understand since they can't mold their whole lives around an obscure fandom they have no interest in.
The problem lies in the fact that they didn't take a snippet of the material and combine it with other things of a similar ilk.
Instead they flipped through bulletpoints of a single source material and used as much as they could find.
This of course has potential legal ramifacations since it's reminiscent enough to look like a deliberate attempt at industrial espionage.
You could say that it's similar to how old Pepsi commercials used to show the characters in them berating Coca Cola.
In the end it wasn't a very wise decision as Pepsi ended up being taken to court over it and was heavily fined.
You see when you use things that are recognisable as someone-else's brand intentionally or not you're representing them.
In the case of the Pepsi/Coke debate the reason for the lawsuit was not because they said it was bad in the first place.
The reason was because Coca Cola actually said things that were untrue about the Pepsi brand which could harm their sales.
In DHMIS we see somewhat a similar circumstance here.
Warren is somewhat of a stand-in for Sam and making him out to be an evil monster isn't really gonna affect the Sam fandom in general.
I think everyone in the Sam fandom is relatively aware this is villainisation from someone who probably doesn't like Sam.
It's not like seeing Sam as the bad guy really takes anything away from his character because it's quite obviously not representative of him himself.
The problem is instead that they take elements like the Tanboura ability and mindscape world and don't accurately show how they work.
Anyone looking at the Sam fandom following this DHMIS episode is going to misinterpret Sam as a brand after seeing these elements.
I'm not going to plain the mindscape thing here because that would take forever though I can show you what I mean about Tanboura.
For those that don't know Tanboura is the name of the spinning wheel of the fates in Greek mythology.
As such Tanboura when it's not called upon is constantly creating the ups and down of people's life threads.
These threads represent a single individuals life span and more importantly journey thtough life and are woven into a vast tapestry.
This tapestry is Hystera or in English "history", a vast complex tale of all the interwoven lives that create all the events in time.
Calling Tanboura is supposed to halt the process and pick the tapestry back to its threads to undo a potentially cataclismic event.
This is so that the event can be woven diffently in a more favorable outcome.
The problem is the definition of "favorable" as many misinterpret who it favors.
Popular fiction likes to believe that it favors the lives of the individuals that make up its threads though sorry Pagans you are wrong.
The method is designed to favor the process itself and prevent anything that could result in the tapestry-making process being disturbed.
Sam is an individual within the threads of the tapestry itself i.e. he is a living being with his own life strand.
This basically gives him the ability to get to the moment information on the ground floor of any potential problems.
Essentially calling Tanboura is like yelling to the foreman of a factory floor to stop the machine to fix an error that might damage the machine itself.
This is why Sam's ability pauses and rewinds time to alter events in future.
Tanboura is basically being run back to find a mistake and change it.
The key difference between Sam and Warren in this respect is who is making the change.
Warren is quite obviously egotistically making alterations that favor himself, Sam however is very different in his approach.
Sure Sam wallows in the way that Tanboura benefits himself when altered, though he's not making the decision ragarding what changes to make.
Sam is basically doing the Tanboura process a favor by looking for any problems and dilegantly fixing them.
We've seen multiple times when errors that might benefit Sam himself happen he still stall calls out for it to be changed.
He knows that the process itself is more important than his own personal interests.
Sam is often jumping through many hoops to gently maneuver things in his favor rather than forcehanding this ability.
The obvious reason for that is that is that he has no control over it itself and has to use tools available to any normal person to get what he wants.
Sam is bound to his task maintaining the flow of fate whether he likes it or not.
The only benefit he really gets from the process itself is a little insight into the flow of events from seeing many possible outcomes.
His planation about working backwards through the events of cause an effect very much demonstrates this.
He can somewhat predict events because he's wily enough to accurately guess what events have taken place before without his knowledge.
He sees how people are acting in the now and has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of what lead them to act that way.
From this kind of knowledge he can predict events and persuade them in his favor with a little manipulation of people in the right places.
It's this kind of ability tat often makes people believe that he is in some ways psychic when in reality he's more experienced than others.
As you can imagine, having to remind time over and over gives his essentially many more years experience for a person of his age.
Here's where DHMIS makes a vital error.
Sam doesn't manipulate events for his own benefit 90% of the time.
To someone looking at it from the outside that seems like what he's doing as many of the characters in the story interpret it as as well.
It's important to note that many of the people who've stuck around long anough around Sam have kind of figured out what's really going on.
Sam is most certainly NOT a Gary Stu even in his own stories as even his friends are often disappointed by his actions.
The people close to Sam are experienced enough to know there's a greater reason for it though it doesn't stop them being annoyed.
You'll see a lot of them genuinely can't stand Sam's attitude though they still work with him because they realise the importance of his work.
That's totally different with how Warren is represented in this episode and to be honest that's understandable all things considered.
I don't think anyone's going to say that Sam's personality is ultimately wildly different from Warren's here.
The problem is that this episode is too close to resembling the Sam fandom to the point where it might look canon to it rather than a parody.
That muddies the waters regarding the mechanics of the Sam universe and sends misleading information.
People aren't going to see it as a parody because there's too many similarities.
If anything people are going to see it more as a tongue in cheek crossover.
Now I know not to take this further because ultimately it's the one episode and over time it'll all be forgotten by either fandom anyway.
It's unfortunate that for a time a large portion of both fandoms are going to get confused and point fingers at each other accusingly.
Each fandom will blame the other of stealing content likely because they don't know the level of professionality of the opposite.
It's very much a point of reference thing.
Basically I made this rant in the hopes that people who read it and think twice before making stupid comments htat'll confuse either fandom.
