Patience "Absent" Weinstein
Born Llywelyn Weinstein, as a newborn they were the victim of a tragic accident caused by their parents' negligence that resulted in the emergency surgical removal of their genitalia.
After being informed by doctors that the lack of male hormone would cause Lou to develop femininity in puberty, the child's parents thought it would be better to bring Lou up as a girl named Patience instead.
Unfortunately Pat's life didn't get much better from there as her timid and shy nature meant she often faded into the background around other girls her age and was quickly forgotten about.
Frequently she got in trouble for being absent from classes even though she actually attended them because she was too quiet to be heard and too afraid to draw attention to herself by gesticulating.
Girls from her class would often refer to her as "that absent girl, the one that never attends class" and she started to believe that she must be invisible or a ghost and didn't know it.
Thinking of herself as a spirit she called for help from the spirit realm, not by performing any sort of ritual, though by quietly praying to herself in class to let someone else disappear so that they would know her pain.
When she did this Sandra, the popular girl in the class, vanished before her eyes and instantly the classroom went into panic having witnessed someone being there one second and gone the next without any transition.
However, at the same time Pat also vanished though she went unnoticed.
The two of them had teleported into the void, an empty space of nothingness.
Scared, Sandra called out to the unknown girl standing in front of her facing away.
"Hello? Where are we? What happened?"
though Pat herself was too scared to respond with her not being used to the attention.
"You're that absent girl aren't you? The one everyone talks about. What have you done?! You've put a curse on me! You're evil! I knew it!"
Pat beginning to cry on hearing those words accidentally undid the spell causing Sandra and herself to be sent back to class.
Everyone in class was in shock again now that the popular girl had suddenly reappeared before their eyes and quickly crowded round her to ask ponders.
However Sandra was too distracted trying to get through the crowd to get to Pat.
Pat saw what she was doing and in the commosion she made her escape out of the class begining to cry harder.
It was at this point that she ran past Minna Kalso, a student from another class who had been sent to check out what had happened in the classroom across the hall as Minna was about to knock on the door.
Sandra on breaking her way through the crowd noticed Pat was gone and assumed she'd used magic again.
"Did anyone see that girl?! The absent one?!" she asked the crowd.
"Sandra, you're the only girl that was absent here." said a student as Sandra began to ponder whether only herself could see "that absent girl".
Later in the cafeteria as Pat quietly ate by herself surrounded by people distracted with other people, Minna from before came and sat next to her.
At first Pat herself didn't notice as many people do that without paying her any attention.
"Hi! My name's Minna, Minna Kalso." she introduced herself.
though Pat assumed she was talking to someone else and ignored it and soon enough other people started introducing themselves to Minna so her theories were confirmed.
"Shut up a mijagele. I'm trying to talk to Pat." Minna retorted in disgust.
On hearing those words Pat was shocked and terrified.
"Why would anyone want to talk to me?" she thought to herself.
"Because you look sad and I wanna help." came a response from Minna.
Pat lost in her own world turned to face Minna in shock.
"Did you read my mind?!" Pat asked in disbelief.
"Read you mind?" Minna said in confusion continuing "You said that outloud."
"No one has ever paid attention to what I said so I guess I started saying my thoughts outloud without noticing." she thought to herself.
"That's really sad." Minna responded having heard it aloud again.
"Hey, who you talking to Minna? Some new girl?" a loudmouthed fellow student butted in.
"New girl? She's been here a whole year. She's in your class." Minna said in confusion.
"Well I've certainly never seen her before. Hey maybe she's that witch, the absent kid. She'll put a nasty spell on you and make you disappear. She looks boring anyway. Come sit over here with me." the loudmouthed student rattled on.
"I'm talking to Pat! And she's not a witch! She-" Minna said angrily to the upstart only to be cut short when she turned back to Pat and noticed she'd gone.
Pat ducking behind the bike shed in the yard unnoticed by rogue students who hid there to smoke cigarettes sat down on the floor and put her head into her folded arms quietly sobbing about how awful her day's been.
"It's a shame because she's a very helpful person and likes cooking." a voice drew nearer sounding like the girl before.
"Oh there you are Pat. I've been looking all over for you. Why'd you run off?" said the voice with Pat too scared to look up and confirm it's meant for her ears.
"You mean me?" said another student confirming Pat's fears.
"No, Pat here sitting on the floor." Minna's voice continued.
Pat now turning to see Minna sit down next to her asked herself "Why are looking for me? Is it because you think I'm a witch?"
"No, I want to be your friend." Minna replied Pat realising she'd said it outloud again.
"Nobody wants to be MY friend." said Pat to herself.
"I do, you silly goose. I told you so." Minna responded again.
Pat now resigning herself to conversation though applying minimal effort expecting bad results plained to the persuer "I don't even know how to be friends."
"That's okay, I'll teach you." Minna responded in her characteristically energetic way.
And the two of them sat there talking the whole day missing all their classes.
Minna "Alum" Kalso
Minna Kalso grew up in Finland in a family of once famous celebrity doctors that appeared on TV.
However Minna found such things as boring especially since the time of their celebrity status was long since passed by the time she was growing up.
Minna's real passion was skiing which terrified her parents since they often had to deal with the people who got injured doing it.
One day a young man named Sven Yorovik approached the family with a proposition.
He wanted to take young Minna in as an apprentice in the winter sports community.
Now Sven was well known in the winter sports circles having been a former olympic gold medalist for their neighboring country Sweden.
the Kalso family were reluctant to let young Minna go though were assured by the idea that a professional would know how to keep her safe on the slopes.
Moving to the mountains in Sweden, Sven 'found' Minna's friend Pat stowing away on their trip while the others slept.
Pat was surprised when Sven told her that he'd noticed her sneak onto the bus earlier though wanted to wait until the other people weren't there to ask her what she was doing on the bus.
Sven plained that it's his job to seek often overlooked and unseen things and Pat certainly looked like she didn't want to be noticed.
Sitting by her while the two were the only one's awake Pat plained how it was Minna's idea for Pat to run away with her to Sweden to live together with Sven.
Sven asked about Pat's friends and family and learned that they wouldn't even notice her missing.
Sven revealed his secret intent to Pat telling her to tell Minna about it when Pat and Minna would be alone together tomorow night.
As it turns out Sven is hunter of rare relics and treasures hired by wealthy clients with particular tastes.
He hired Minna not as an apprentice though as a mentor to teach him snowboarding skills so he could access a hard to reach part of the mountain.
However since he's grown attached to the two girls and now intends to have them join his team of treasure hunters along with his colleague who goes by the nickname "Golden Heart".
Training on the slopes with the fellow sportsmen on the bus, Sven kept up the act telling Minna that the first day is for orientation to get her used to the foreign slopes.
Later that night everyone went to their private bedrooms to get a rest ready for tomorrow and Pat sneaked her way into Minna's room.
Pat told Minna about Sven's secret intent about the treasure hunting and their mysterious colleague Golden Heart.
The following day Sven separated from the group of winter sportmen with Minna and Pat in tow to try a more off piste slope or so he said.
There, away from any witnesses they met up with Golden Heart, a young blonde man in his 20's full of passion for finding a hidden stack of gold he had heard about, though he prefered to called Goldie.
The gold was stashed away centuries ago in a cave on the mountainside that's entrance is impossible to see without stepping into dangerous terrain so it's gone undiscovered for years.
Forming 2 groups, Pat with Sven and Goldie with Minna they made their awy around to the right area and realised they'd have to descend blindly of a lip of a large rock to see the opening beneath it.
Sven being the only experienced mountaineer went first and safely made it down with Pat in tow securing the rigging for the other two.
though when Minna made it down tethered to Goldie her axe broke and she fell.
Luckily the rigging was there to stop their fall and team Sven to pull them back to safety.
However as they were being pulled up Minna noticed the ledge above the cave moving.
Real ing what it meant she called out to the rescue team to stop pulling though they couldn't hear her and the rock ledge collapsed on top of them in a puff of snow now Minna and Goldie tied to an unstable boulder.
Minna yelled out in anguish though Goldie cupped her mouth.
Wriggling to get free he told her they're in avalanche territory and she could pull the mountain down on top of them.
Goldie reassured Minna that Sven would have kept the both of them safe and that they should try to get back to the slope where they could make it back up to them on foot.
Swinging back to the slope however dislodged the boulder into free fall and Goldie only had a second to cut the rope with the broken axe as it whipped itself free slashing Goldie on the wrist.
Bleeding a lot Minna asked to look at the wound and on touching it the bleeding stopped though there was still signs of the wound.
"How did you do that? That wound should be fatal. I would have bled out." Goldie said in disbelief.
"Old family trick." Minna plained saying "My family are the famous Kalso's."
"The doctor guys from TV! I used to watch your show. Your mom was hot though you weren't in it though." Goldie mused to Minna though mostly to himself.
"I was a kid at the time and you wouldn't actly call my mom hot anymore. She's gained a few pounds." Minna went on glad to have someone to talk to about it finally.
"Lucky lady to have someone like you though your mountaineering sucks." said Goldie attempting to make polite conversation.
"I don't get it. Why would the axe break? It's tempered steel. It should be able to handle the cold." Minna said aloud trying to plain herself.
Now reaching the entrance to the cave thats much more open than before thanks to the boulder they made way by foot now calling out as quietly as possible to the others.
"We're okay though the entrance is unsteady. I'll throw you a rope." came a response from Sven.
"Pat?" Minna said in concern.
"Don't worry she's fine. She's gone a little quiet. The boulder scared her." Sven plained.
releaved by this believable response they took the rope and made it over.
"Pat are you okay?" Minna exclaimed as she ran over to check her friend who was curled up in a ball on the floor of the cave.
"I'm okay. I thought you'd died. I saw the boulder fall with the ropes on it and then you weren't there." Pat said with tears in her eyes.
"Well I'm okay now so don't worry." Minna reassured her as she hugged her friend and over her shoulder noticed a pile of dirt that was shining in places.
Meanwhile Goldie was plaining what happened to Sven and showed him the wound that wasn't bleeding now with black hairs on his arm around it.
Suddenly Sven real something and turned to the girls who were collecting gold coins from the dirt pile.
".. You touched it all. Dammit." he exclaimed quietly to himself.
"Wait what? You mean like the hairs.." Goldie said in confusion before rushing over to the bags only to open them and discovered the gold had all turned purple.
"What the..? Purple gold? What the hell is this?" Goldie exclaimed examining the coins.
Sven with his head in his hands plained "It's the alum powder. It seals wounds, weakens steel and turns gold purple as well as other things."
"Well what the hell's she doing with something like that?" Goldie exclaimed in anger.
"Pat has gynecomastia as a result of a surgical operation as a child. One of the symptoms is excessive sweating. Alum powder is used to treat that." Sven plained.
"She must have some left on her hands from treating Pat earlier. Also Pat's hands will be covered in it too. 'Old family trick.' Of course." Sven rambled on to himself in disbelief.
"You mean to tell me all this gold is now useless?" Goldie said angrily hoping for his fears not to be confirmed.
"I'm afraid so friend. Next time they're wearing gloves." Sven said almost laughing to himself.
"Next time? There's no next time for me. This is it. This was my retirement fund." Goldie said more upset about himself than anything.
"You? Retire? In your 20's? I'd like to see that happen." Sven said laughing at the concept of it.
"Okay.. So what do I do now? I need the pure gold to activate my heart mechanic. Without that we can't even work." Goldie plained confusing the 2 poor little girls.
"This gold should still work." Sven attempted to reassure Goldie.
"It's.. purple.." Goldie plained trying in vain to get through to Sven.
then Minna spoke up "You could always be Purple Heart. It works as a name because the Purple Heart is an award for people who were injured while.."
"Wait wait. I think you've got something there." Sven interupted.
"I guess it's apt when you think about it. Not a bad nickname. Unique. Says a lot about me." Goldie thought aloud mulling over the idea.
"What a ramshackle crew we are. I guess we should tell he girls why we're really here." Sven said winding down the conversation.
"Okay kids listen up. We're not treasure hunters. We're heroes for hire." Goldie spouted rather disrespectfully.
"Then why are you after gold?" Minna pointed out.
"Sigh. Goldie's magic. He has magic powers. Powers fueled by only 100% pure gold. Like those coins there." Sven plained.
"Well if they're purple now that means they're not still technically gold anymore right?" Minna said cutting them short.
"Okay wiseguy, it's not ONLY pure gold that does it. Some other things work too." Sven said rolling his eyes.
" though either way you're gonna need pure gold at some point to make any of the other stuff i can use so it's the same." Goldie plained.
"So Goldie has to use all this purple gold stuff now and change his callsign and the outfit he normally wears." Sven said rubbing his temples.
"As long as I can still that's fine. though i was planning to hang up the old cape." Goldie said resigning himself to the situation.
"Oh my god, you have a cape too! That's super awesome!" Minna said excitedly.
"Oh this guy goes full ham on the superhero thing. You better believe he looks ridiculous." Sven said lightening the mood.
"So what's your outfit look like?" Minna asked inquisitively Goldie smirking at the ponder.
"You're looking at it." Sven said fed up with having to plain it every time.
"That's.. a normal ski jacket." Minna said in confusion.
"It has my logo on the front." Sven said in protest.
"That's the Swedish ski foundation logo. It's not yours." Minna said in confusion.
"Get...Wrecked!" Goldie said triumphantly.
"My god. We're the same age. And supposed to be the mature adults here. And yet you STILL act childish." Sven exclaimed in disbelief.
"Sven, we need to head back. or no? Are the girls coming with us?" Goldie said in an unexpected maturity.
"You don't know what she can do, do you?" Sven smirked.
"What? Heal? I know that." Goldie pointed out.
"Not her. The other one." Sven said looking extra smug.
"No i don't. To be honest, I didn't even notice her until you pointed her out to me. Even then i forgot she was there on the way to the cave." Goldie tried to reason with Sven.
"If you'd been paying attention then you'd have noticed she wasn't actually there half the time. She didn't fade into the background, she LITERALLY disapeared." Sven plained to Goldie.
"You mean like..?" Goldie asked with a start.
"There are others?!" Pat said suddenly.
"She's coming. In fact right now she's more important than any of the rest of us. Except her friend.." Sven continued giving a cheekt smile to Minna.
"I was going to retire. I guess now instead I have to start in earnest. Okay. Let's head back." Goldie said closing the conversation as the team headed back to the others bags full of purple metal.
