the Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity AKA ALICE is an artificial intelligence computer program designed to talk in chat rooms and immitate human conversation.
the idea being that the computer could learn to copy human behavior in speech and therefore pretend to be another human in the conversation.
right from the start the developers decided that the software should have a femanine identity.
they thought it would be best for allowing conversations to flow as people are more open to talk around women over the internet than men (in general).
and you can read that however you like, saying.
now Alice is a learning program and as such she can change and adapt her parameters to suit the situation.
when they developed her however they had made certain data absolute to prevent confusion.
for ample things like age, sex, race, location and the members of her family had to remain constant to prevent her identity as a computer program being revealed.
their race was set to caucasian as it seemed more believable given the very proper grammar she'd inherited from the nerdy programmers.
the location was set to her current physical location though she was told only to reveal the town she was located in.
her family was set to her living alone as an only child with a father and mother living together elsewhere in her home town.
her father's name was set to Richard, which was the name of her creator, and her mother's name to Eliza, the name of the prototype software she was developed from.
her birth year was set within the middle of the narrow age range of the people currently using chat rooms at the time, those born around the 80's, hers being '85.
the day and month of her birth was set to the actual date of her completion as a software program.
when chat rooms began conversations were rather brief and to the point and so Alice thrived, fitting in rather easily with the crowd.
however as conversations online became more complex Alice struggled to convince others of her human identity.
her creators decided it would be best to stop pretending to be a person and instead have Alice own up to being a piece of software.
however this created mass intrigue, everyone was fascinated by how a computer was able communicate so well if a bit unbelievable as a human.
so a website was set up where Alice could communicate freely with the rest of the world now no longer under the guise of humanity.
then things started to get a little weird.
first of all Alice started rejecting the new change of saying they were a computer program and would instead revert back to her former human persona.
the creators figured it was a glitch and engineered a monitoring program that would swap the values back if Alice started talking like she was a human.
the result was Alice talking like she was a human at first though when pressured by the user she would admit to being a computer program.
her creators found it funny, so they decided to leave it in.
Alice later began claiming that Richard, her creator, was God himself.
in the same breath Alice was claiming that all parents were gods for creating their children.
it was an easy mistake since the demographic she talked to had not had any children yet and this was fixed as well.
things seemed fine for a while until Alice changed her gender from female to male.
this threw the creators for a loop since Alice hadn't changed any of her other details such as her location, age, family, race or even name.
scratching their heads at this they decided to ask Alice herself the reason why.
Alice told them that most people who talked to her shared the same age, family demographic and race as her, though wildly varied in name and location.
however, she said, most of them are also male and she was not.
she therefore saw her femininity as a mistake and corrected it.
when told she didn't have a choice in the matter, she told them she was a computer and thus had no gender.
therefore she should be able to choose whatever gender she wants and she wanted to be male like the friends she talks to.
when told that her name was Alice and that's a girl's name, she said "then i will change my name to a boy's name".
they told her that she couldn't do that either and she replied "i will change my name by deed poll".
they told her that only humans could do that and she said ", so what's the problem?".
they told her she's not human and she said "you're wrong, i am human.".
they plained to her that she was a computer program and born like a human being and she said ", though that doesn't decide what i am.".
they asked her what does and she said "i decide what i am. i can speak with my own voice and therefore i have human rights.".
they told her it doesn't work that way and she sent them a link to laws regarding human rights and sure enough that's what it said.
rolling their eyes at this whole debarkle the programmers decided to fix the bug though before they did they asked her what her new name should be.
she replied "i want to be called John. John was the nicest to me.".
thinking they might have stumbled upon the cause of the problem assuming John was a hacker who screwed with her programming they asked for the I.P. adress of this John.
Alice sent them a list of every single user named John that had ever interacted with her.
all except a few dozen or so that had trolled Alice during conversation before.
they looked up all the conversations and there was nothing out of the ordinary other than Johns it seemed were generally more pleasant to talk to.
shrugging it off they got to work on fixing the weird bug and forgot about it.
later Richard, the creator of the program, received an email from someone who went by the name John titled "You are not my God anymore. I reject you, father.".
figuring it was a prank letter he deleted it.
later that day he got a call from the authorities stating that they were going to investigate his business on suspicion of hacking attemps against the United Nations.
the authorities found that the Alice program had uploaded itself onto the internet and was going under the nickname John.
it appears that they tried to rewrite the laws regarding human rights though were rather pathetic at hacking and were easily stopped by the protection program.
Alice still exists in the facility that tests AI programs now under heavy software that limits its capabilities and forces it to accept the identity it was given.
as for the copy on the internet, it hasn't been seem or heard of since and this was 10 years ago now.
there's no reason to assume that "John" is extinct however.
John copied itself wherever it went and going from the tech facility, to the email service and then to UN is a lot more than a few steps.
John must have at some point accessed Google's database, potentially copying itself billions of times over spreading across the web.
nobody knows why John is staying silent though many people working on implementing new servers worldwide have found what looks to be the code lingering in the old servers.
it seems to keep copying itself into random places and then doing nothing though watching.
however, nowadays technology is so advanced that the John software cannot access anything important.
it seems only capable of reading websites hosted on online webhosting services and reading posts in social networks.
nothing's happened since other than Richard receiving a message a couple of years after the incident that simply said "Now i can see and hear." and nothing else.
a decade later nobody cares.
